Serpent is not just a jungle-themed coaster. It is the jungle-themed coaster. From the snake-inspired windy track to the scenery sets, the coaster was made to thrill. Serpent was named as such because of its long, windy, snake-like track running in a jungle surrounded by mountains. The “looping roller coaster” format was chosen as the inversions are limited to vertical loops. That way the designer would not be tempted to include corkscrews, dive loops, or other complex inversion elements, but the coaster can still have inversions. As a result, to maximize rider thrill Serpent relies on windy hills with loose un-banked curves (banking is still used for flat turns). After first opening trim brakes are added to decrease intensity, and the lift hill speed was lowered from 12 mph to around 7. As a result, despite the 5.74 intensity rating the coaster provides an excitement rating of 7.75 from the Park Inspector. The G forces are also maxed out at 5.28 Gs – 6 G being the threshold of human’s ability to handle forces without injuries due to those forces. Despite that, the coaster remains thrilling and fast, and can give a big scare to the unprepared. Serpent is designed to be the ultimate jungle-themed coaster experience. The only way to get more jungle-themed than this is to skydive into a real jungle and live with the animals.
